NIGHTSHADE I
In this horizontal composition, Mengle conjures a twilight realm where large, star-shaped bittersweet nightshades stretch across a verdant field, framed by a brooding gray sky that glimmers with hovering stars and shifting bands of pink, red, and blue. The broad format heightens the horizontal sweep of the landscape, guiding the viewer’s gaze from the foreground’s lush greenery to the swirling, nocturnal heavens above. The purple flowers dominate the lower half of the canvas; rendered in thickly applied acrylic and accented with velvety flashe, their vivid petals and golden centers glow against the surrounding dark field. Short, gestural brushstrokes in yellows, blues, and greens evoke leaves and stems in semi-abstract fashion, suggesting a vitality that both celebrates nature’s vibrancy and alludes to the plant’s mystical, possibly poisonous undertones. Above, the sky’s subtle gradations of gray transition into atmospheric swaths of bright color, interspersed with tiny, white star points that impart a sense of wonder.
